Q: Why do I need an equine veterinarian? A: Equine medicine and surgery are difficult and specialized. Less than 10 percent of a veterinary education is spent studying the horse. An equine veterinarian works to gain this special knowledge and skill during and after pursuit of the DVM. Continuing education is solely focused on equine issues, not other species. Most importantly your equine veterinarian is a horseman, interested in the life and activities of you and your favorite equines.
Q. Can I make an appointment on line? A. This can be done if you book at least 10 working days ahead by emailing Dr. Hildebrand at : ronhildebrand@verizon.net. You will be called to confirm or change the appointment if needed. If you need an appointment soon, call us at 989-772-2999.
Q. How much do farm calls cost? A. It depends on your location. The closer you are to The All Equine Clinic the lower the farm call fee. Fees range from $60 to $120. Clients over one hour drive from Mt Pleasant will need to make special arrangements.
Q. Does my horse need a coggins test every year? A. Only if showing or traveling out of state. Michigan law states that any horse tested since 2001 will not need to be tested again, ever. However, if you are traveling out of state you will also need a livestock inspection after the coggins test results are reported.
Q. How and when should my horse be vaccinated? A. Much depends on how your horse is used. If the animal never leaves your farm or local trails, very few vaccines are needed. However if your horse travels, a more complete vaccination program is recommended. Please call our office for help in this area, as recommendations change each year.
